The Cons About Dash Cam Apps
- You’re unable to multitask with most dash cam apps and so, you won’t be able to record and use your map app at the same time.
- You have to remember to take your phone out of your pocket or purse and have it ready when you’re in your car.
- It takes a few extra seconds to set up your smartphone to record like a dash cam every time you go somewhere in your car.
- If you don’t have a good, sturdy mount for your smartphone, the video will be shaky and of poor quality and that can prevent you from identifying important information, if needed.
- If you don’t have a case on your phone, you’re limited in options when it comes to the different mounts you can use. A lot of the newer mounts are now magnetic and will need a metal surface to stick to – unless you want to stick the metal plate to your phone, you’re going to have to use a case to either stick the plate directly to it or put it between the phone and the case.
- The recordings can take up a lot of storage on your phone and will limit you on how many you’ll be able to retain. Some dash cam apps do offer cloud backups; but there are many that don’t.
- If your phone isn’t held tightly by your mount, it can go flying if you have a sudden hard break or if you’re involved in a collision. If it goes flying, it can prevent the smartphone from recording anymore evidence, if needed and there’s a chance that it can damage your phone.
So as you can see, there are both pros and cons to using your smartphone as a dash cam; but if you look through the list, some of those issues might not apply to you or they wouldn’t affect you as much and you can use your smartphone as a very good alternative to an actual dash cam.
For me, the cons were a pain in the ass and I didn’t want to deal with all the hassle and time; and so I started looking a little harder for actual dash cams.
My last search wasn’t that long, actually; inside the Nexar app, they had an advertisement for their own dash cam and it looked pretty cool and so I clicked the Amazon link.
After a few minutes of looking at pictures, watching videos and reading the specs, I decided to pull the trigger and buy it. The price was around $50 and I figured if I didn’t like it, I could return it and get my money back.
Nexar HaloCam – The Review
Before I begin, I just want to let you know that I did not receive money or product for writing this review. I am not associated with Nexar/HaloCam – except that I use their app and I’m in their beta program; where I test their latest app updates before they’re released to the public. I purchased the Nexar HaloCam with my own money and this is my honest review. Thanks!
With Amazon Prime, the Nexar HaloCam was delivered 2 days after placing my order and about 30 minutes after that, my new dash cam was installed and ready to go!
They Say Pictures Are Worth A Thousand Words; But Yet, I Still Had To Type This Whole Post, Even Though It Has Pictures…
Here are the pictures of the box, packaging and contents for the HaloCam; keep in mind, my picture taking skills are laking! Click the pictures to enlarge.
Your right on the app requiring “always on” to auto-record but also if you have “background app refresh” on it still auto-records in the background without the app being up, just as long as you do not close out the app entirely and it’s running somewhere in the background.
