To save you some time from having to read this long review to see if I like the HaloCam or not: I do like the dash cam and I would recommend it; however, there are some small issues that could deter you from wanting one and if you want to know what those are, keep reading!

Even though cars are getting smarter and have a ton of safety features to help prevent accidents, the roads still can be a scary place sometimes. And that is why dash cams are becoming more and more popular. I’ve been using my cell phone and the Nexar App as my dash cam for the past couple of years; but I just purchased a Nexar HaloCam and wanted to share my thoughts.

Like I always say, it’s not my driving that I’m worried about, it’s everybody else that pose a threat. Am I perfect? No. But at least I don’t do dumb stuff behind the wheel while driving (cell phone, eating, messing with the radio…etc) and I try to always be aware of my surroundings and look ahead at all times. There are some people who have a hard time just keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. Scary.

Having a dash cam in your vehicle can make your commutes a little less stressful by knowing you have video evidence of the idiot that caused your accident and will help the police and insurance companies to go after the right party for who’s at fault.

A couple of years ago, I happened upon videos and gifs of dash cam videos that caught so many different scenarios, that it made me start looking into them and possibly purchase one.

I did a lot of research online and at that time, a proper dash cam was hundreds of dollars and I didn’t want to invest that much money into getting one yet, because I wasn’t sure if it would be something I would want to use or if I’d receive any benefits from it; so I just continued keeping my eyes opened until I found the right one for the right price.

In the meantime, I stumbled upon Nexar on the App Store. Yes, there were other dash cam apps on there, but something about Nexar really stood out to me (probably the ‘Free’ price tag ?) and I decided to download it. I’ve been using it ever since.

As with anything, there are pros and cons to using your smartphone as a dash cam.

The Pros About A Dash Cam App:

  • If you already have a smartphone, it’s a free dash cam!
  • It’s portable and can be moved from car to car with ease
  • It can be positioned in any angle and is more versatile for where you can place it in your car (dash, windshield, air vent…etc).
  • Depending on the quality of your smartphone camera, you can capture great video footage
  • Using your smartphone as a dash cam helps prevent you from using it while you’re driving; of course, you’re free to switch out of the app anytime you want; but if you’re really focused on driving safe, you don’t have to worry about switching to another app while driving!
  • You’re able to take your smartphone with you and not have to leave it in the car and risk having it stolen. You can remove a portable dash cam (like the HaloCam) but it’s not always convenient to bring it with you everywhere you go.
  • With the Nexar app, all videos are backed up to the cloud and so you don’t have to worry about losing your videos if your phone is erased, lost or stolen.
  • You don’t need a main power source to allow the dash cam app to record. Yes, you want to make sure your phone has adequate battery and should use a charger when recording; but at the same time, if you’re battery is charged, you can just tap record and go and not have to worry about charging your phone. With most dash cams, you have to have a constant source of power, like the HaloCam.
  • You can accessorize your smartphone and therefore, you’re dash cam app is just as stylish as you are and you’re not stuck with just a standard, generic color like everybody else!
  • If a dash cam isn’t for you, all you have to do is delete it from your smartphone and poof, no more dash cam! With a regular one, you’d have to store it somewhere or try to sell it and you would probably end up losing money.

  1. Your right on the app requiring “always on” to auto-record but also if you have “background app refresh” on it still auto-records in the background without the app being up, just as long as you do not close out the app entirely and it’s running somewhere in the background.
