You walk over to your refrigerator to get some ice or a glass of water and you notice a red H2O light on the display and now you’re probably panicking and wondering what it means. You might’ve already guessed that it has to do with the water system since H2O (not H20), is the element makeup of water.

The good news is: It’s nothing serious! The bad news is: You’ll have to spend a little bit of money to get rid of it if you want to continue to drink filtered water.

The red H2O light on your Whirlpool refrigerator means that your water filter needs to be replaced and should be replaced soon so you can continue drinking great-tasting, filtered water. This pretty much applies to all brands of refrigerators – LG, Samsung…etc.

That’s what that stupid light means – isn’t that annoying?!? I mean, come on, they could’ve made it a little more obvious by using something else like “Filter” or some other kind of symbol… but a red h2o light?!? #H2O?!?

I thought there was something wrong with the water dispenser or the water line when I first saw the light. ?? I know H2O means water and I was able to narrow it down to something with the water, but come on; it’s not an obvious warning light to tell you that you it’s time to replace the water filter.

The water filter status light lets you know when it’s time to change your water filter. You do not have to replace your water filter if you don’t want to; but eventually, you should expect to start tasting unfiltered tap water through the refrigerator water dispenser.

Where Do I Get A Replacement Water Filter for my Whirlpool Refrigerator?

Now that you know what the red H2O light on your Whirlpool refrigerator means, you’re now probably wondering where are you going to get it – right? Well, there are several different places where you can buy a replacement filter and it’s pretty much up to you where you want to buy them – but do understand, you may end up paying more going through one outlet over another.

Depending on your preferences, you can buy an OEM water filter direct from Whirlpool (everydropwater.com is the site they send customers to reorder replacement water filters) or you can buy either the same brand or a generic one from Amazon Walmart or eBay…etc. The generic water filters work just as good as the OEM’s but they cost significantly cheaper. Some people prefer to buy OEM because they don’t want to experience any issues or they prefer the taste of the filtered water over the taste from a generic filter.

The price of replacement water filters varies and ranges anywhere from $17.99 up to $49.99+. Some people will be ok with shelling out $50 for a replacement water filter and some people much rather pay $18 for a generic one. Again, it’s up to you on what you want to spend. Just do some research and make sure you’re buying the correct one for your refrigerator or else you can damage it and it’ll cost a whole lot more than fifty dollars to fix!

What Model Number Replacement Water Filter Do I Need For My Refrigerator?

When you’re looking for a replacement water filter, you’re going to need to know what model number you’re going to need. Finding that information is relatively easy.

Most of the time, you can find the replacement water filter model number in the owners manual of the refrigerator, on a label inside or behind the refrigerator or it might be directly on the water filter that’s currently being used (unless one was never used or replaced).

Most Whirlpool replacement water filter model numbers start with EDR and then the rest of the number will depend on the model of your refrigerator. You can find the model of your refrigerator either in the owner’s manual of the refrigerator, a sticker on the inside of the refrigerator or on a label on the back of the unit.

Sometimes a quick Google search will help you determine what model number your refrigerator is or the model number of your water filter.

How Often Do I Have to Replace My Water Filter For My Refrigerator?

Another question you’re probably wondering about is, how often do you have to replace the water filter in your Whirlpool refrigerator – well, again, that will depend on the model of your refrigerator and the make and model of the water filter.

Some water filters need to be replaced every 3 months, some every 6 months and others, only once a year. Depending on the size of the filter, the contaminants that it’s filtering and other factors, you may have to replace your refrigerator water filter on a regular basis. Be sure to read the instructions from the filter manufacturer to find out the exact intervals.

Once you know the replacement cycle of your water filter, you can use that information to help you determine how much money you’re willing to spend on the replacement filter. If you have to replace your water filter every 3 or 6 months, that can add up pretty quickly and before you know it, you’re spending over $100 a year on replacement water filters… some people won’t bat an eye at that and others will think that’s just too much money and will either buy a generic water filter or go without one.

For us, water filters are necessary because we don’t have the best-tasting water and we are more comfortable drinking water that has been filtered for some main contaminants. We usually tend to buy the generic versions of the water filters, but we do sometimes buy the name brand if there’s a good deal available.

Where is My Water Filter Located on My Whirlpool Refrigerator?

Most water filters are located on the bottom of the freezer and can be accessed by opening the freezer door on your double-door refrigerator. Depending on your specific model, that location might differ.

After you open the freezer door, you should see a small compartment door on the bottom – if you open that door, you will find the water filter hiding inside.

Once you open the compartment door, you will see the water filter

On some models, the water filter will pop out as you open the compartment door and on other models, you will have to pull the water filter out of the unit manually, by twisting the filter 90° counterclockwise (to the left).

Remove the old filter by pulling it straight out from the compartment

I Replaced My Water Filter – Now What?

Ok, so you successfully replaced the water filter on your refrigerator and now you’re wondering if you have to do anything else to ensure everything is operational and functioning properly.

The next step is to “purge” the system – basically, that means running the water from your refrigerator water dispenser into a bowl or a big container, from anywhere between 1 and 10 minutes or up to 7 gallons of purged water for some brands. Typically, most water filters recommend purging 3 to 7 gallons of water after the installation of a new water filter.

Each filter manufacturer has its own set of instructions; so to ensure you’re properly installing your water filter, please refer to the manufactures instructions that came with the water filter. These are just basic guidelines.

The reason why you’re purging the water is because you want to get rid of all the loose carbon particles that have been loosened from being handled after it left the manufacturer. Sometimes, the water can be grey or even black because of all of the loose carbon inside the filter. Once you purge the filter, the carbon should not disperse again unless you remove the filter for whatever reason. Yes, it’s a wasteful step but it’s a much-needed one.
