It’s that time of year again (in the Northern Hemisphere), where the temperatures are dropping and with it brings freezing rain and snow – this is when your pet’s paws are the most vulnerable and need the most protection when they’re walking outside.
Whenever tempratures drop below 35ºf, that’s when your pets can start feeling discomfort on the bottom of their paws; when you introduce freezing rain and snow, it amplifies the coldness and can cause more pain and discomfort.
Rock salt is also another danger to pets and their paws – the rough, jagged edges of the rock salt act like sharp pieces of glass and can cut the bottoms of their paws and you know what happens when salt gets into wounds, right?! So we don’t want that happening to our pets either – that’s why shoes/boots/socks…etc are a must for your pets during the winter months.
You can find a lot of different varieties on Amazon, Walmart…etc. They range in price from $5 and go as high as $35 – I recommend buying the cheaper ones if these are going to be your first pair of boots for your pet.
We’re fortunate with Parker, he allows us to put them on him without any issues; I think the first time we tried putting the boots on him, he was not having it – but I think some it had to do with us not knowing how to put them on him but after that, it now only takes about a minute to put them on all 4 of his paws and he loves them!
If your dog isn’t having any of it and won’t allow you to put the boots on their paws, you’ll have to try coaxing him/her with treats or toys to help them become comfortable enough for you to put them on – you’ll also want to try finding kinds that allow for easy on/off, so you’re not having to fidget with multiple things and can concentrate on slipping them on.
If you’re still having issues getting your pet to wear the boots, I’ve heard some people use Glad “Press and Seal” Wrap on their pets paws… I never tried it, so I don’t know how effective it would be, but I’m assuming it wouldn’t hold up too long and I’m not sure how much protection it could provide – it might help with the rock salt, but I’m sure it’ll still be cold for your pets.
If you use Glad Press and Seal on your pets paws, leave a comment below about how effective it is and if you have any tips or tricks.
It doesn’t matter what you decide to use to protect your pets paws in the winter, just so long as you’re using something and they are being protected! We have to keep our furry friends safe and warm!
